Confessions of a Transylvanian is a one-of-a-kind, backstage look at the greatest cult movie phenomenon of all time - the live Rocky Horror Picture Show - told by those who lived it. The highest-rated Rocky Horror book on the market, Confessions is a moving snapshot of life in a Rocky Horror cast that captures the grit, language and teenage angst of a group of fishnet-clad performers as they explore a world where the only rule was Don't dream it. Be it.

Confessions of a Transylvanian A Story of Sex Drugs and Rocky Horror (Audible Audio Edition) Kevin Theis Ron Fox KT Communications Books

I'll confess -- I was never a big Rocky Horror fan. I saw it once with friends in High School and sort of left it at that. So while this memoir looked interesting, I also wasn't sure I'd make it all the way through it.

Luckily, you don't need to have been immersed in Rocky Horror to enjoy this story. It's a great time warp back to the 1980s and being a teenager, and the thrill of finally finding a group of friends you fit in with. It captures the same sort of feeling that the show Freeks and Geeks did, and frankly I wish one of the cable networks would turn this into series, because it's got great characters and a great story, and, you know, sex and drugs and songs.

Theis does a great job both in writing the book and in his audio narration, which is easy to listen to and well-paced. There were many instances earlier in the book where some of the events are narrated where I really wished the whole scene with dialogue was fleshed out, but that's only because the characters were so interesting. As the story went on more of the actual dialogue gets rendered, and it's just great.

So if you're looking for a nice change of pace, give this one a listen.

Confessions of a Transylvanian A Story of Sex Drugs and Rocky Horror (Audible Audio Edition) Kevin Theis Ron Fox KT Communications Books Reviews

When Rocky Horror returned to my home town as a midnight show i attended the first hundred screenings in a row. It was a drunken revel and a revelation. Kevin Theis takes us back on a guided tour of that time and apparently 70's/80's Iowa isn't that different from Florida. I recognized similar situations and certainly familiar thinking and attitudes. Like Kevin, I, as a straight man learned that we all have a flamboyant side sometimes not so far under the surface just waiting to get out. The book also follows Kevin's developing love of the thetaer as he learns that it is process makes performance possible, it is the journey that deepens meaning in life. If you were in anyway a part of the Rocky Horror wave of the dying seventies and burgeoning eighties you will love the cleareyed view, if you love the Neo-Rocky thing currently happening with the "youngsters" here's a peek at how it became such a thing. I found it a terribly rewarding read.
Very funny. Quick read. Brings back a few Rocky Horror memories, but nothing like his. Well written and very enjoyable. Laugh out loud sometimes!

3/11 Update. I wrote the above at about 1/2 way through. I LOVED this book. So much fun. Poignant, funny, interesting, kept my attention. I RARELY read anything other than sci-fi fantasy (is that a cliche since I loved the Rocky Horror movie? -)). In fact I probably read 150+ sci-fi fantasy books a year (instead of watching tv, or say, exercising myself or the dogs.) In fact, I can say I hate reading "normal" books about people's lives. This one was the exception. Of course, I remember going to a few Rocky Horror midnight flicks in So. Cal. in the 80's and it's my generation, so I can relate.

It was really fun to read this side of it, since I was never more than an audience member shouting at the screen and throwing rice. But that was fun too!

I recommend the book. Easy read. Very well written. Punchy. Kept my interest late at night when normally this type of book would not. Gave me a dose of nostalgia to boot, but not a bad one. If you ever attended a Rocky show way back when (or recently?), read this! And even if you didn't and want to know more about it, read it. And definitely read it if you've watched the video and don't get the movie.
I was lucky enough to have been gifted with a pre-release edition of Confessions. I was there with Jack, & Ron, and Donny, Kenny, Russ, Tracey, Sunday and Andrea. So you could say I lived this book alongside the authors.

What did I think about it? It made me laugh, cry and reminisce about those days. And nights. It made me realize why, after thirty years, I am still close with these people - they are my family - oh; not by blood... it's more than that. There's a saying "You can't choose your relatives". Well I chose these relatives and they were pretty good choices. Thanks Jack & Ron, for writing this... you got it (mostly) right. Good job.

Ahem... and now, on to the jist of my review... This is a coming of age story. It's primarily told by Kevin (Jack, to us), but it's the story of every teenage kid who felt left out, odd, or passed over by his or her peers. It's about finding out that you can be better than everyone says, be a part of something special, and that you can build friendships and bonds that will last a lifetime. At the Bar Mitzvah of one of the girl's sons, Jack spoke to the kids who were there. He said that he wished that they could make the kind of friends he (and we) did at the Rocky Show. I totally agree.

This book explains why.
