Guy Newell Boothby (13 October 1867 – 26 February 1905) was a prolific Australian novelist and writer, noted for sensational fiction in variety magazines around the end of the nineteenth century. He lived mainly in England. He is best known for such works as the Dr Nikola series, about an occultist criminal mastermind who is a Victorian forerunner to Fu Manchu, and Pharos, the Egyptian, a tale of Gothic Egypt, mummies' curses and supernatural revenge. Rudyard Kipling was his friend and mentor, and his books were remembered with affection by George Orwell

This is an interesting follow up to ‘A Bid for Fortune’ which I gave three stars due to plot issues. That story was told from the perspective of the protagonist, Richard Hatteras, while Dr. Nikola was the villain working behind the scenes. ‘Dr. Nikola Returns’ is told from the perspective of Wilfred Bruce, an associate of Nikola, who is hired to help the Doctor find out the secrets of the stick he stole in the first book. Bruce is a very decent guy but even when Nikola is completely upfront about all the nefarious things he did in ‘A Bid for Fortune’ he remains loyal partly because of the small fortune Nikola is paying him and partly because Nikola actually seems like a decent guy. It's very interesting that Guy Boothby took the mysterious nemesis from the first book and put the reader in his corner for the second. We discover his motivation behind his quest for the magical stick and he actually comes off as not a bad fellow. If for nothing else than he’s quite loyal to Wilfred Bruce to the point where he risks his quest rather than give the man up. He even shows real care over his hired ‘coolies’. The problem with the story is the pondering pace. Everything moves soooo slowly. Bruce and Nikola travel around China in search of the secret of immortality but very little happens. Wilfred finds a love interest, which really adds nothing to the story and is just obligatory given the era in which this book came out. Naturally the love interest was a white woman living in China since an interracial relationship might be too much for readers in the 1800’s. The partnership of the two men is interesting and Dr. Nikola remains a fascinating character but I struggle to think of more than a few things of note that happened in the book.
This is the second book in the Dr. Nikola series, the next one being ‘The Lust of Hate’ which supposedly only features a peripheral appearance by Dr. Nikola. Overall I prefer a series like Arsene Lupin or Fantomas. The main strength of this series is Dr. Nikola himself and given that there are only five books total I plan to finish and hope the other three books pick up the pace.

The antiheroic Nikola, it appears, is after some sort of amazing longevity discovery, known by a certain group of monks, who, of course, live in a mountain fastness.
An adventurer named Bruce falls in with him, and much impersonation of Asians and arduous travel through Asia ensues. On reaching the monastery, their ruse is finally discovered, and it appears they are for the long leap. Some fast thinking and clever work by Nikola, and a few secret ingredients gets them out, amazingly enough, with a book of information he was after.
A little Nikola cunning leads to their escape, but the pursuit is hot, and a close thing, but at the end, Chinese assassins are still on their trail.
